The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) says about 70% of all firefighters in the USA are volunteers, and 85% of the nation’s fire departments are all or mostly volunteer.  Furthermore, communities with fewer than 10,000 residents are almost always served by volunteer departments.

What an amazing statistic and one that highlights how true leaders not only lead in their professional lives, but also lead in their private lives by giving back to their communities.  I believe there is even more to this story!

As a younger man I was a volunteer fireman in four different communities in which I lived.  As I moved, I always found a firehouse in which to volunteer.  As much as I may have contributed to these communities, the lessons I learned far outweighed my contributions.  I, of course, learned how to be a proficient firefighter, but also learned other life lessons.  Lessons about people from different walks of life that I might not have had access too otherwise.  I served with presidents of companies, business owners, printers, electricians, farmers and practically every other profession in between.

Exposure to these diverse backgrounds gave me the inspiration and the desire to later become a mentor and an elected official in my town (a non-paid volunteer position).  It also solidified some of my father’s life principles (my Dad was also a volunteer fireman).  Principles of treating each other fairly, honestly and equal.

So, how should we as leaders give back?

– Volunteer in our communities (for young people there is a wealth of free knowledge to be gleaned from other volunteers)

– Mentor young people or those who need help (pass along your learned values)

– Get involved with a cause (whatever it might be you’ll meet new people and gain new insights)

– If you truly have the desire, become a volunteer firefighter, in my experience they are ALWAYS looking for help

The bottom line; as much as giving back makes us feel good, it is also a great leadership learning tool!
