When we think of leaders, we often think about them looking forward to new opportunities and new challenges. Recent events in our country and in my town have made me believe that while looking forward is important, leaders should also consider looking back.
During the peaceful transfer of power in Washington last week I was struck by the ceremony and tradition, which I love. The events and actions of both parties before those sacred events though, were less than perfect.
I am an elected official in my Town and in a recent meeting there were many politically-based comments made and similar retorts from the other side. Once again, less than perfect behavior from both sides
My intention is not to make political statements here, it is to show leaders that while these groups are clearly looking forward to the next steps, they could greatly benefit by looking back. To use these examples to do better in the execution of their duties.
So, what do I mean by looking back, it means returning to core values. It means remembering those things we learned as children. What our parents, grandparents and other mentors taught us. The ideas of basic morality, kindness and the premise of treating people well.
As leaders, I challenge us all to look back every once in a while, as we move our people forward. As those around us devolve into one-upmanship, be the leader who brings us back!
What should we as leaders look back for?
– Reminding us of our core values
– Grounding us and keeping us humble
– Remembering to treat others well
– Empathizing with others, putting yourself in their shoes.
The bottom line; looking back is a powerful tool to moving forward.
